CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings coach Kepler Wessels said the mood in the camp was upbeat ahead of the team’s first Indian Premier League game at Mohali on April 19.

Wessels conceded that the team was short on the pace bowling front but said he expected the batsmen to make enough runs to overcome the shortcoming.

About batting in the Twenty20 version, he said, “It is a lot about clean cricketing shots and positive batting. You don’t have the time to settle, but you can pick the right ball and choose the right place on the field. You can take calculated risks but you don’t have to slog.”

Wessels looked forward to the challenge and expected off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan to be influential.

Rescue the game

Speaking to the media, Muralitharan said Twenty20 cricket will eventually rescue the game. “People want entertainment and this form of the game is here to stay. I think Test cricket will not be affected by Twenty 20 since the players consider Tests as the greatest honour and challenge. ODI cricket could be hit.”

On the role of the spinners in Twenty20, he said, “I played a few matches in England and enjoyed the format. The bowlers have only four overs but the batsmen have less time to settle down. The spinner can take the pace off the ball and buy wickets.”

Meanwhile, Australian opener Matthew Hayden joined the team on Tuesday.

The Super Kings’ squad for the first game in Mohali was also announced.

The team does not include paceman L. Balaji whose fitness is being monitored. “He lacks match practice. We do not want to rush him into the competition,” said the side’s Director of Cricket Operations, V.B. Chandrasekar.

MUMBAI, (IANS): For sheer glamour quotient, Mumbai Indians are matchless. Their captain Sachin Tendulkar's stature is enough for Mukesh Ambani to rake in profits in the first year itself, having spent $111.9 million to buy the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 side - the costliest of the eight teams auctioned.

While every team would like to be the champion side, winning just the first prize of $1.2 million might not have been the top priority of the business tycoons and Bollywood stars who have invested millions of dollars in the IPL. But for coaches, captains and players, cricket will surely come first. It is no different with the Mumbai Indians.

Although money is no problem for the Mukesh Ambani's Reliance group, no businessman would like to splurge without adequate mileage from investment in return.

Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher, South Africa’s top stars in the Indian Premier League, feel that age and their reputation as Test players will not be a barrier when they enter the field for the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Twenty20 tournament starting April 18.

“We have done it throughout our career, adjusting to Test cricket, one-day cricket and Twenty20 cricket,” the 32-year-old Kallis said in Bangalore three days ahead of their inaugural home game against Kolkata Knight Riders. “So the players are used to it, it is a different mindset. It is probably easier to go from Test cricket to one-day cricket than it is the other way around. We are looking forward to some exciting cricket.”

Had he not missed out on the three-figure mark in Kanpur, Sourav Ganguly felt he could have rated last innings as his best in Test cricket.

Graeme Smith, the South African captain, had no doubt that it was the former Indian skipper's gutsy innings of 87 that separated the teams in the third Test and helped the hosts to finish the series 1-1.

However, the best tribute possibly came from the opposition coach Micky Arthur.

The South African coach had made a CD of Ganguly's innings for the benefit of youngsters in South Africa should they want to learn how to play the spinners on a turning track.

He also had a surprise gift from one of his close followers Harbhajan Singh. The Man of the Series had presented him a mobile with Blackberry technology after Ganguly's determined 87 in the second Test in Ahmedabad.

Good times seem to be here again for the Prince of Kolkata, who would be leading his city team in the Indian Premier League from Friday.

Following are the excerpts from an exclusive interview:

Gulf News: Do you want to rate this innings among the top five of your Test career?

Ganguly: Definitely. If I had reached the three-figure mark here, I would have definitely kept it on the top. It was really tough batting out there. The ball spun, the wicket had irregular bounce and we were under real pressure. So it was easily one of my best efforts.

Better than your come back innings in Johannesburg?

There, I was under more pressure. I was coming back into international cricket and I had to get runs. In terms of handling pressure, that 51 may have been the best knock but wicket-wise this 87. The South African pace attack is one of the best in the world now and Harris managed to extract a big turns. Rarely, you have to play on such wickets and I was happy to score for the team.

Just as you went out to bat, Rahul Dravid got out to a snorter from Morkel. What did you think when you came out of the dressing room?

Well, you can not think or plan anything on such a wicket. You have to go there and play your natural game, hoping that the ball will behave normally! You can't prepare for the abnormal things and that is not under your control too. I did not want to think about those factors which are not in my control. I was prepared to face the balls as they would come. Playing your natural game on such wickets helped you and I just did so.

What about the heat in Kanpur?

In all the three Tests in Chennai, Ahmedabad and Kanpur respectively, we had to beat the heat. Having played for so many years in India, we have learnt to beat the heat. We are quite accustomed to it. So, it was not a problem.

But you had missed another hundred just like in Ahmedabad...

Yeah, it was disappointing for me to miss out on another hundred. But when you win a Test coming from behind and square the series, these personal milestones are not on your priority list.

I wanted to be there at the wicket for some more time and wanted the team score to reach 300 while I was there. It's great that Sreesanth and Ishant (Sharma) played their parts and gave us a handy lead even after I got out.

I should mention the efforts of Laxman, Dravid, Yuvraj and Dhoni too. When you had lost the toss on such a wicket but have scored than more than 300 in the second innings of the match, it is indeed a good score. If I had got my hundred here, I would have definitely ranked it my best Test century so far.

The bowlers did the trick for India in the second innings...

Yes, they were simply superb. It would have been tougher for us to chase a score of anything more than 150 in the fourth innings, but they had restricted the South Africans' lead to 61 and it was a great job done by them.

Harbhajan finished with 19 wickets in the series, Ishant was playing his first Test at home, Chawla, Sehwag, Sreesanth - every one bowled superbly. It was a team effort.

You were adjudged the Man of the Series against Pakistan in December and awarded the Man of Match in this Test, too. Did you expect it?

To be honest, I had nothing in my mind. We were playing with the intention of squaring the series and when we could do so, we were more than happy. When my name was announced, I was naturally happy.

On Indian soil, Sunil Gavaskar had played one of the greatest on a turning track when he scored that 96 in Bangalore against Pakistan. Any memories of that innings?

That was a great innings. The surface was almost unplayable and Sunnybhai, being a true champion that he is, played like a master technician. You can never forget such brilliance. It was a marvellous knock.

You are always under pressure to perform. How do you handle it?

It's okay with me. I have known how to live under pressure. Sometimes, I really feel that if the pressure is not there, it will be difficult for me to perform!

How can you sound so confident?

I have a bat in my hand and that should take care of everything. At the end of the day, what you do is more important and I am ready to perform every time I go out there. But I know it is impossible to score big runs every time you walk out to bat.

Why do you think that the South African pace attack is the best?

The pace attack of this team is the best in the world now, even better than the one we had faced in Australia just a few months back. Ntini is the best with the new ball. Dale Steyn can retain his pace even with the old ball, while he is also capable of swinging it in reverse direction. And this new guy, Morni Morkel, is quite impressive.

Will you get Shoaib Akhtar to play for your Kolkata team in the IPL ?

I believe, we might get Shoaib. But if we do not, Australia's Mitchell Johnson is free. We can go for him.

In a few days from now, you will have to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. Sourav Ganguly is the leader again!

It is a new tournament and I am hoping to carry my form there. In Twenty-20 format, you never know what happens next. I had played a few games while playing for Glamorgan when I was in England. The paying people likes the excitement of the 20-overs game.

Chandigarh, April 14 (IANS) Bollywood diva Preity Zinta and her industrialist beau Ness Wadia-owned Kings XI Punjab is one of the strongest teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the team management is confident of living up to the expectation in the inaugural Twenty20 tournament, starting Friday. Zinta and Wadia, along with renowned industrialists Karan Paul and Mohit Burman, pumped in a whopping $76 million to buy the Mohali team’s franchise for a period of 10 years.

They have also made a strategical investment of about $5 million in the players’ auction to get the best buy. Though the team management claims that they have got the players they wanted, their bench strength will be severely tested once the Australian and West Indies players leave for the series between in two countries in the Caribbean midway through the 44-day event.

“We have a very good team. We have a lot of dynamic players in the team. We have great mix of experienced and youngsters in the team, which is important in Twenty20 cricket. It will provide lot of energy and enthusiasm in the team,” said Kings XI CEO, Neil Maxwell, who represented Australian ‘A’ side as an all-rounder.

“Our bench strength is the weakest and it will be tested within two weeks once Lee, Simon Katich, James Hopes and Ramnaresh Sarwan leave on national duty,” he added.

The Yuvraj Singh-led team is a very young promising team with only three players being above 30 years of age, and Maxwell and it was consciously planned that way by the team’s think-tank at the time of the auction.

“Having a young energetic team was a part of our strategy at the player’s auction. From the start we were after three things - dynamic players, young and enthusiastic players and players with good personality,” he said.

The team also has shrewd coach in Tom Moody who has seen it all in the highest level as a player and as a coach. Moody, who was a member of Australia’s World Cup-winning squad in 1999, guided Sri Lanka to the World Cup final in 2007, before returning home to coach Western Australia.

The freshness of Kings XI in all departments of the game is its biggest plus point compared to other seven teams.

In Yuvraj, Mahela Jayawardene, Simon Katich, Kumar Sangakkara, and youngsters like Luke Pomersbach, Karan Goel, Uday Kaul and Tanmay Srivastava, the team has a formidable batting line-up.

Australian speedster Brett Lee will be spearheading the bowling attack with Sreesanth and Irfan Pathan in tow, slippery Kiwi customer Kyle Mills in support.

The only weak-link of the team is the absence of a quality spinner. The spin department, with Piyush Chawla, Ramesh Powar and Yuvraj, looks shaky and considering that the slow bowlers played a pivotal role in the Twenty20 World Cup on the fast South African pitches last year, they will be cursing on missing out homeboy Harbhajan Singh.

However, Maxwell has different take on the matter and said: “I don’t think our spin attack is a matter of concern. We have a good mix. We have six bowling options plus the services of Yuvraj. Anyways, the spinners are never going to bowl eight to nine overs in a Twenty20 match.”

“Twenty 20 is a lottery. On a given day, one good performance from any player can win the tournament.”

Strengths: The Kings have a balanced side, with an array of impressive batsmen and bowlers. The age is one their side and the team is basically a composition of youth and experienced. With the likes of Yuvraj, Jayawardene, Sangakkara, Sarwan, Katich, Pomersbach in their ranks, Kings XI make for an awesome batting line-up. The Punjab team also have potent pace attack with Lee, Sreesanth, Irfan and Mills.

The side also has some very talented youngsters in India U-19 World Cup winning cricketers Srivastava, Kaul and Ajitesh Argal.

Weaknesses:

Though the King’s XI do not have any weakness on paper, two things might work against them, one the lack of bench strength and two the absence of a quality spinner.

Overseas players to watch out for:

Lee: The 31-year-old tearaway pacer from New South Wales — who rates Preity Zinta as his favourite actress — will definitely a nightmare for batsmen with his sheer ability to run through any batting line-up on any track with lightning pace. Lee’s speed allows batsmen less time to react, increasing their chances of making a mistake. Lee has the ability to change the complexion of a game on any surface in six deliveries.

Apart from being a tearaway pacer, Lee is also a handy batsman and is good in the outfield. He is averaging just over twenty in both Tests and ODIs.

Kumar Sangakkara: A technically sound middle-order batsman, Sangakkara churned his own niche in international cricket as one of best wicket-keeper batsmen. En route to his highest Test score of 287 against South Africa, Sangakkara has record partnership of 624 with Mahela Jayawardene in 2006. He is also member of the elite club of Test batsmen who have five or more double centuries to their credit.

The 30-year-old is a highly talented left-handed strokemaker, a slick wicketkeeper, a sharp-eyed strategist. His approach is naturally aggressive. Sangakkara will be a great value for Kings XI.

James Hopes: The Australian all-rounder was quoted the largest price of $300,000 at the second round of players’ auction because of his all-round skills he displayed in the recent Commonwealth Bank series against India. Basically, a medium-pacer, the 29-year-old Queenslander is a handy lower middle-order batsman who can hit the ball a fair distance. Because of his ability to come up with variations, Hopes is an ideal death-overs bowler.

Local players to watch out for:

Yuvraj Singh: Yuvraj is the captain of the Kings XI Punjab. The southpaw became the first player to hit six sixes in a Stuart Broad over during last year’s Twenty20 World Cup match against England. He is a naturally gifted timer of the ball and has the capability of tearing away any bowling attack on any soil. Because of his strong, fearless character both on and off the field, many youngsters see him as idol. In a span of eight years, Yuvraj has become the vice-captain of the Indian ODI team.

Sreesanth: The 25-year-old Kerela pacer is known for his on-field exuberance. Sreesanth is the first Kerala bowler to take a hat-trick in a Ranji trophy game. The pacer has a remarkable wicket-taking ability and providing breakthroughs.

Tanmay Srivastava: The young left-hand batsman from Uttar Pradesh admires Rahul Dravid as his idol and is regarded as one of brightest prospects of Indian cricket. He played a key part in India U-19 World Cup triumph this year in Malaysia, finishing as the top scorer of the tournament with 262 runs. His batting skills and ability to lead from the front makes him a great watch in the inaugural IPL tournament.

IPL ticket sales yet to take off in big way

With just five days to go for its inaugural match, ticket sales for the Twenty20 cricket tournament of the multi-million-rupee Indian Premier League (IPL) is yet to take off in a big way.

Only a handful of teams have started sales of their tickets while others are still pondering on a suitable date.

The hype generated by inaugural IPL has already added to the excitement of fans who would be eager to see the international stars rub shoulders with national and domestic players in a unique format.

But it seems they will have to scamper for tickets at the last minute.

Various franchises have kept the ticket prices as low as Rs.50, which will allow even the common man to witness the T20 tournament. The franchises, though, have done little to publicise the mode of sales.

The matches start at timings varying from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and play is expected to end after midnight. Soaring heat and odd timings of the matches will definitely be factors that spectators will consider before booking their tickets.

Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad were the first to start ticket sales on Friday, followed by King XI Punjab of Mohali on Saturday. Mumbai Indians also started the online sale of their tickets from Sunday.

“We are glad to announce the sale of tickets online and we look forward for the public to extend their support for the Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians team has a great mix of iconic international players and talented youngsters,” said R. Balachandran, president and chief marketing officer, Reliance Retail.

But other franchisees are yet to announce dates of their sales, which is sure to create some confusion among the spectators.

All franchises have adopted different tactics to lure the spectators. Deccan Chargers will provide free refreshments to all spectators. Fans would also be treated to a variety of exciting entertainment shows and fireworks at the venues.

Deccan Chargers have also announced a lucky draw scheme. Every ticket will carry a coupon for a chance to win fabulous prizes. These include a Mercedes Benz, seven Maruti Swift cars, 35 Yamaha motorbikes and 35 colour televisions.

Team owners are also going out of their way and selling tickets themselves. Kings XI Punjab’s co-owner Preity Zinta and Australian paceman Brett Lee personally sold tickets and autographed them as well.

Bula Sports fans! Being on leave from work these past two weeks I've had the opportunity, thanks to Sky Pacific, to catch up on some major international sports events and take my mind off Fiji's IRB 7s rugby woes.

Mid-week I watched Liverpool versus Arsenal live in the 2nd round of the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League played at the Kop, Liverpool's home ground fortress. What a classic game that was between two world class club sides. Liverpool displayed their typical fighting spirit all the way through to late in the 2nd half where they snatched victory at the bell 4 - 2 to advance to a semi-final against Chelsea. Man U also made it through to the semi-finals although I completely missed that game.

Despite the loss of the gunners, the fact that the English Premier League still has 3 of 4 teams in the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League for 2008 speaks volumes about the current quality of English Club football. Contrast this to here in Fiji where there are regular calls to ban foreign players from the IDC and other local football competitions.

I also caught a snitch of the 2008 NCAA basketball championship final where with only 2 seconds to the final buzzer, Mario Chalmers sank a 3-point jump shot from the top of the key to force overtime and eventually the win for his Kansas Jayhawks over Memphis. Contrast this US College basketball game televised live to millions of viewers around the world with the Fiji versus Wellington women's basketball game at the National Gym having to be called off before halftime last Friday evening because of a power failure.

Which brings me to a tribal ritual every Friday and Saturday evenings during the Super 14 (S14) season at my home where everyone runs for cover as my 68-year-old mother, usually accompanied by her partner in crime, my dear older mother-in-law, totally hog the remote control and the best seats in my house to watch all the S14 rugby action; in the process hurling abuse at all the South African teams while cheering on any player who looks remotely like Jo Rokocoko!

It's tough, but my MBHS-red fire-son and I have learned to keep our heads down, survive their verbal threats and occasional violent outbursts directed at the TV without having to call Shaista and lodge a human rights complaint!

Starting last Friday morning, I've watched live coverage of the 2008 US Masters from Augusta, Georgia in what must surely be the most beautiful televised presentation of any sporting event in the world.

I recommend that all budding Fiji television sports producers, cameraman and commentators watch the Augusta coverage for the sheer beauty of the camera work, the total professionalism of the presentation and the expert commentary.

As I write this on Sunday morning before brunch, Tiger, Tiger is stalking, moving quickly from -1 after two rounds on Saturday to -3 through the first 10 holes! As William Blake so eloquently word-smithed it over a century ago: "What immortal hand or eye framed thy fearful symmetry?"

If you read this piece early enough on Monday morning, you can catch Tiger stalking the four golfers ahead of him in the final round of the 2008 US Masters, one of the world's greatest sporting events, up until about midday. For my money, Brandt Snedeker of Nashville, Tennessee has got his country rhythm going and looks to be the pro to beat. Run Brandt run!

But the sporting event that has really caught my imagination is the Indian Premier League Twenty-20 Cricket competition set to start this coming Friday, May 18, in India.

Sneering cricket purists call it "hit and giggle", but "Twenty-20", a new 3-hour version of the gentlemen's game is serious business.

Modelled on England's football league, it will involve eight teams based in big cities around India (the world's biggest cricket market), privately owned by high-profile individuals such as billionaire industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Vijay Mallya and Bollywood film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta.

Reliance Industries owner, Mukesh Ambani, successfully bid US$112 million (F$166m) for the Mumbai team while Kingfisher beer baron, Vijay Mallya, paid US$111 million (F$165m) for the Bangalore team.

Bollywood super star "SRK" joined hands with Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta to put down US$75 million (F$111m) for the Kolkata team.

Not to be outdone, fellow Bollywood starlet, Preity Zinta and her boyfriend, Ness Wadia, won the bidding for the Mohali-based team paying US$76 million (F$112m).

The other 4 teams, based in Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Jaipur were bought for US$84 million (F$125m), US$91 million (F$135m), US$107 million (F$159m) and US$67 million (F $99m) respectively by individual companies and mergers, one including Australia's Lachlan Murdoch.

The IPL has already contracted the top 80 players from all over the cricket-playing world for 59 matches over 44 days in this their first season, including Shane Warne for US$1 million (F$1.4m), his spin twin Muttiah Muralitharan for US$250,000 (F$372,000) and fellow Sri Lankan batting star Sanath Jayasuriya for US$250,000 (F$372,000) to give you an idea of the huge kudos being handed out.

Indian batting superstar Sachin Tendulkar and Aussie all-rounder, Andrew Symonds are also expected to earn in excess of US$1 million (F$1.4m) for 44 days of playing the game that they love in India starting next week.

Adding to the huge stockpile of cash generated by the IPL, Sony broadcaster Sony Max and sports rights company World Sport Group, jointly paid US$1 billion (F$1.4b) for shared rights to the league for the first 10 years. This arrangement gives World Sports Group the global media rights for internet, mobile and radio, with Sony Max bagging the South Asian TV rights to the competition.

Why such huge numbers? Well as the accountants would say, "It's a numbers game dummy"!

Cricket, which started on a small village green in England, is now the single shared passion of over a billion people in India and another 350 million fans across South Asia. Games between India and Pakistan draw in excess of 400 million television viewers in India alone.

This cricket fan in Fiji, 1:1.3 billion, can't wait for the umpire to signal "play" in the IPL in India come this Friday.

The Indian Premier League with its multi-million dollar deals, has changed the face of cricket, said former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, who is in the city to play for Chennai Super Kings in the multi-million dollar league. Fleming, whom was bought by the Chennai Super Kings for $350,000, admitted that he was “astounded” by the amount of money involved.

“Like most players, I was astounded by the moneys involved in the IPL, but I feel it is going to be incredibly exciting and the league is something that has changed the face of cricket,” Fleming said.

The sentiments were echoed by his former teammate and all-rounder Jacob Oram and Australian Michael Hussey.

While endorsing the IPL whole-heartedly, the trio felt that beneath the veneer of entertainment that Twenty-20 cricket format projected, lay a lot of cricketing skills and something that cannot be overlooked.

“Yes, T-20 is all about entertainment, but still you need cricketing skills to win matches and it is a complex game. There is also a lot of technique involved like the way you plan a chase or set a target, batting in the middle overs and such situations,” said Fleming.

The rejuvenation of the New Zealand cricket squad continued apace today with four players gaining national contracts for the first time.

With Daniel Flynn, Aaron Redmond, Jesse Ryder and Tim Southee added, the Black Caps' list of 20 contracted players announced by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) today took on a fresh new look.

Their inclusion was expected, as all have been picked for the tour of England beginning next month.

NZC have taken a punt on big-hitting Ryder, 23, who made his limited-overs international debut against England this year, averaging 49 in five matches.

The burly 23-year-old's promising career was soured after he punched a bar window in a late-night outing prior to the test series.

He damaged his hand which will need several months to heal and it is hoped he will be fit to play a part in the one-day programme in England.

Southee, 19, burst onto the test scene when he took a five-wicket bag and scored an unbeaten 77 on debut in the third test against England in Napier last month.

National team general manager Lindsay Crocker offered some consolation to those without contracts, although in the case of Sinclair and Bell, the curtain may have been pulled down on their international careers.

"Players who have missed out on contracts can play their way into the Black Caps through domestic performances and can expect to pick up major association contracts," he said.

Contracts had been awarded to the 20 players who have the greatest likely future value to the Black Caps in the next year, he said.

The contracts have a tiered pay scale but NZC does not make that information available.

"Twenty-five players are ranked by the selectors against set criteria in respect of test cricket and 25 players are ranked by the selectors against set criteria in respect of ODI cricket.

"There is a weighting of 1.25 for test rankings and 1.00 for ODI rankings. The 20 players with the highest aggregate score are then offered NZC contracts."

South African stars Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher and Ashwell Prince will stay back to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League from the beginning of the tournament itself. The three did not make it to the Cape Cobras team for the domestic Pro 20 semifinals.
However, captain Graeme Smith figured in the Cobras team announced on Monday and he will not play in the BCCI-backed Twenty20 league for Rajasthan Royals till his domestic commitments are over.

Six South Africans in the Test squad for the just concluded series against India - Smith, J P Duminy, Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Ashwell Prince and Monde Zondeki – were available for selection but Cobras team management decided to include only Smith and Duminy.
